2011 Yavapai County Fair Canceled; Organizers at Work for 2012 Renewal
Expressing its deep regret, the Yavapai Fair Committee announced today that, due to financial reasons, it would not be able to put on this year’s county fair. The fair had been scheduled for the Yavapai County Fairgrounds Sept. 29 – Oct. 2.
“With no guarantee of state funding, and with the added costs of possibly moving to a new location, we recognized it wouldn’t be financially responsible of us to go on with plans for 2011,” said fair committee member Phil Bybee.
“This has been a heart-wrenching experience for all of us associated with the fair, but we will channel our energies into its revival for 2012.”
The fair had been a county tradition since 1913, with only the Spanish Influenza, the Great Depression and World War II interrupting its lengthy run. The county fairgrounds, located on State Route 89A in Prescott Valley, has hosted the fair since 2001. Prior to then it had been held at what is now known as the Rodeo Grounds in neighboring Prescott.
The cash-strapped Yavapai County Farm and Agriculture Association, owner of the fairgrounds as well as Yavapai Downs, filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy July 13. That filing made it impossible for the fairgrounds to host the fair this year.
The Yavapai Fair Committee had discussed relocating the fair to Tim’s Toyota Center in Prescott Valley, and even back to the rodeo fairgrounds in Prescott, but for various reasons found those options unworkable.
